Faces of Our Future: A Presentation by Philadelphia Academies, Inc.
Featuring the work of and student voices from West Philadelphia High School’s Academy of Applied Automotive and Mechanical Science, Bok Vocational Technical High School’s Academy of Process Technology, and Swenson Technical High School’s Academy of Applied Electrical Science. These Academies are among twenty-three Academies in Philadelphia public high schools that Philadelphia Academies, Inc. supports through industry-related curriculum and programming, work and life readiness services, internships, and a network of caring adults. This presentation was created in partnership with photography students from the University of the Arts. This presentation will introduce the audience to how exploring STEM through career pathways makes it relevant and real for young people; how engaging students in their interests gets them to invest in and become excited about subject matter often perceived as difficult or boring; and how investment from industry, powers the work and partnership as employers grow their own workforce with Philadelphia Academies, Inc.
3E Institute 21st Century Educator Externship
As an Entrepreneurial Institute, 3E is committed to offering professional development that is responsive to the needs of educators, designed with an eye toward 21st Century workforce expectations, and ever-mindful of the goal to engage and educate all students to reach their potential. The 21st Century Educator Externship course, first launched by 3E in 2006, was developed to assist secondary educators tobetter understand regional workforce development needs. It also enables them to explore how curriculum can be shaped to motivate students and better align with workforce expectations. In this 35-hour fieldwork experience, educators are partnered with a company/organization whose work is related to the educator’s core content or specialty area. During the fieldwork placement, educators interview and job shadow members of a business team and then connect the interviews and work of the company to the classroom. Participation in an orientation and debriefing session are required.
