Educator 500 Spotlight: Susan Yocum “Mushroom Lady of Kennett”

Susan Yocum is a seasoned second grade teacher leader and mentor of Kennett Consolidated School District. She wrote a book about mushroom farming to help her students learn about this major industry where many of the parents of her students work. A Pocketful of Poets Inform and Inspire at WCU


On Saturday October 20 West Chester University’s Fourth Annual Children’s Literature Conference will attract a crowd of more than 350 teachers, librarians and undergraduate education majors. It will be a special day for those who love books and children, and who want to learn new things about books and illustrations from nationally acclaimed poets. Lisa Marano was not sure if she would like what she was getting into:

Wachovia Backs Teachers as the Constant in the Educational Equation


Kevin Dow, Community Affairs Manager for the Wachovia Foundation is a highly visible person in the region’s non-profit and educational communities. He also represents one of Wachovia’s points of pride – The Wachovia Teacher Initiative. College of Education Flashpoints

Dr. Paul Morgan organized a ‘Green Schools' forum, held June 27th-28th at West Chester University.

The event addressed LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certified buildings, schoolyard habitats, local cafeteria food, project based service learning, and environmental literacy programs.

Dr. Christian Penny, assistant Professor of has been named an Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE).

Educator 500 and West Chester University Associate Professor Chris Penny has been selected to join the Apple Distinguished Educator (ADE) program. ADE's are members of a select group of 600 professionals around the world possessing an identified expertise in educational technology leadership. They also are advisors to Apple on realities of integrating instructional technology into learning environments The ADE program provides a unique forum for these exemplary educators to exchange ideas and information about the effective uses of new technologies. Verizon’s Thinkfinity formerly known as Marco Polo, this site is a valuable free resource for teachers and students, a leader among educational offerings available today. For the second year in a row the website has been named the best site to download free lessons in Edutopia’s annual reader’s survey. In addition, Thinkfinity also offers a range of professional development and training material.

The Futures Channel site presents short videos going behind the scenes with professionals from a wide range of careers. The subjects of the video clips discuss why math and science are so important in their fields. There is also a Hands-On Math section of movies on counting, algebra and other math applications. The films can be downloaded free of charge and used for classroom activities.

PBS has launched a comprehensive new web site for K-12 educators called “PBS Teachers”. It is a portal for all educational resources and services of PBS – lesson plans, teacher professional development, video, blogs, and more. A new blog, “Media Infusion,” showcases ideas for using media and technology in the classroom and there are hundreds of resources from local PBS stations, among many other features.

The Association for Library Service to Children offers practical resources to support children's librarians and educators in their work and also to link children and their families to the best resources in print, non-print, and emerging formats. Among its resource links for youngsters are online children’s libraries and best websites for kids.

Great Funding Sites

LEGO Children’s Fund
The LEGO Children’s Fund makes grants for programs with a special interest paid to collaborative efforts and in providing matching funds to leverage new dollars into the receiving organization. Recipients must be qualified tax-exempt organizations including educational organizations for specific projects in early childhood education and development, technology and communication projects that advance learning opportunities and sport or athletic programs that concentrate on under-served youth. Typical grants are $500-$5,000. Grants are made quarterly: for a December 2007 decision, the application is due November 1.

Toshiba America Foundation
Toshiba Grants Program for grades 7-12 Science & Math Education welcomes proposals from public and private non-profit schools that improve classroom teaching and learning in science and mathematics. Especially encouraged are projects planned and led by teachers or teams for their own classrooms. For awards less than $5,000 there is no deadline. For awards of $5,000 or more the next deadline is February 1, 2008.

Mathematics Education Trust
Established by the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics, the Mathematics Education Trust (MET) supports the improvement of mathematics teaching and learning at the classroom level by funding grants, awards, honors, and other projects. Among other areas, MET makes grants that support improvement of classroom practices and increasing teachers' mathematical knowledge. Also, the NCTM Lifetime Achievement Awards are presented annually following a nomination and selection process. Other awards are available through a competitive process based on proposals submitted by individual applicants. All 2008–09 applications must be postmarked by November 1, 2007.
